What Is Larceny?

In Connecticut, larceny is referred to as the wrongful act of obtaining, taking, or withholding another person's property with the intent to deprive the owner of that property permanently or to appropriate it to a third individual. Generally, larceny includes theft of services, property, embezzlement, extortion, shoplifting, receiving stolen property, and keeping lost property without reasonably trying to find the owner.

Degrees of Larceny

There are six degrees of larceny crimes in Connecticut. This means that if you are convicted of larceny, the value of the property stolen will be a critical factor in determining what your penalty will be. For instance, larceny in the sixth degree is referenced as petty larceny and the lowest level of these theft offenses. Under Connecticut laws, this charge applies when the dollar value of the stolen items is around $500 or less. But penalties can include anything from fines up to $500 and even imprisonment up to three months.
